October 4, 1971 : at the cour
October 8, 1971 :
he goes back to California, suffering from depression. Moreover once he’s in L.A, he finds out that Marcia (his last girlfriend) and her children left their home in Simi Valley. She took everything with her, including the record player his sisters had offered him for Christmas. Tina Craddock, his sister remembers: “Marcia looked good but when Gene went to London, she took all his money from the bank”.
Gene is heartbroken and short of money (he’s prosecuted by his -ex- third wife, Margaret Russell for alimony non-payment whereas Marcia his last living partner has just robbed him). He feels everybody’s betrayed him and he’s completely disoriented. The Divorce procedure with Jackie has begun but he’ll never receive the court decision itself.
He drinks but he doesn’t eat anymore
Louise his mother had the foreboding that Gene was dying and she called him. He answered her: “I’ve just come back mom, but she took everything I had, even the record player”
October 11, 1971 : Gene’s parents Kie and Louise Craddock worry about him and ask one of their friends, Mr Sterling to drive them to Simi Valley.
Louise says: “I’ve been there and what I’ve seen was so heartbreaking; his face was grey, it was a real nightmare. I just wanted to take him home but he refused so; I wanted to accompany him to the Veteran’s administration hospital but he refused to go there.
October 12, 1971 : Louise, Kie and Sterling come back to him as his health state has worsened. He drank a lot but he didn’t eat. They decide to take Gene to their home, but at the sill of the house, Gene stumbles and falls down. His body is giving up due his chronicle ulcers, and he begins vomiting blood. Louise took his hand; he looked at her and said: “Mom you can call the ambulance now”.
He’s driven by ambulance to the Inter valley hospital in Newhall
Gene passed away one hour later. After she saw him on his bed at the hospital, Louise said: “after he died, he had a smooth smile on his face; he was happy he had escaped his misfortune
The funeral took place 3 days later. According to Evelyn, Gene sister, it was a mess, a bad mess. Donna his other sister was a member of a religious movement and she wanted to take control of the whole ceremony. Phone calls came from everywhere, but nobody knew where to go. Flowers were sent but never found their way. Gene just had one bunch of flowers.
Few of his friends came but Johnny Meeks was present. Jackie cried and shouted that Gene didn’t want neither to be buried nor to be cremated, but to have military funeral and to be buried at sea.
It was a sad end for one of the most creative American artist. Gene lies for ever at the Eternal valley memorial park, not far from Newhall hospital where he died. His grave faces San Fernando highway. Fast cars and trucks go their way all day long near the black leather rebel. It’s just normal since Gene spent a great part of his life on the roads to do his shows. The tour is over but his music is still living.
